An open letter to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer

blkwhitefilmpix:

Ms. Mayer -

While some of us rightfully feel that your comment “… there’s really no such thing as a professional photographer anymore” shows that you and your company don’t really care about those who use Flickr, may I invite your attention to the meaning of “professional?”

Professionalism has nothing to do with what kind of camera we use, but everything to do with character and skill.

That means a professional does whatever it takes to achieve the desired result, within the bounds of ethics and honor. A professional gets the picture, and doesn’t make excuses. A professional makes personal sacrifices to get the job done. Sometimes, as was the case with Robert Capa, Dickey Chappelle, Larry Burrows, Chris Hondros, and Anton Hammerl - to name just a few - a professional makes the ultimate sacrifice to get the picture.

A professional knows what to wear. A professional knows how to behave at an event, and how to speak in public.  A professional has integrity.

On the subject of integrity, one should say what one means and one should mean what one says. Since you apparently didn’t care enough to talk with one of your PR flacks before making your comments yesterday, (and even if you did) integrity means your feeble attempt to walk back your poorly thought out comments and your attempt at an apology just don’t cut it.

So, if one of my fellow photographers in the Bay Area gets a call from you about photographing an event, I hope that photographer will reply: “Sorry, there’s no such thing as a professional photographer any more,” and present you with a dial tone.

Thank you.

A lot of people - especially teenagers have been busy playing with their cameras and post-processing their photos. Taking photographs might be that easy but for some instances, it may be hard. There are some who are really desperate to get that awesome-and-amazing-photograph without the power of photo editors but how can they capture photos amazingly? Most photographers edit their photos so that it will look great! But what is also the best photo editor?
Here are some tips and suggestions from our featured bloggers:
Rina Oviso of cottonwires
Camera: Canon EOS 550D
How to get that awesome-and-amazing photograph many people have been longing to get?
“To be able to get that awesome-and-amazing-photograph, I always use manual mode for its much better than auto mode, auto mode is for noob. As my photography professor said, auto mode is for stupid. If you want to use auto mode, then buy digicam instead.”
What is the best photo editor and why?
“Lightroom is the best photo editor! Post process. That means you will just change some colors. Minimal lang kasi yung mga ineedit. In my photography class before, we never use photoshop for editing.”
They say that if the megapixels of the camera are low, the shots wouldn’t be that catchy and amazing, d’you believe in that?
“I guess? The most important in the picture is the quality of the shots. The higher the pixels, the better the shots!”
What advice or words of encouragement can you give to the people who’s in into photography?
“Just keep on shooting and experiment!”
Lara Murallos of deepfriedjupiter.
Camera: Nikon D3100.
How to get that awesome-and-amazing photograph many people have been longing to get?
“The best way is just to let the story unfold. You don’t have to instruct anyone to do some poses because there’s going to be no honesty. Just let it unfold.”
What is the best photo editor and why?
“Photoshop! ‘Cause photoshop is like the Anna Wintour of all photo editors. Once you learn how to manipulate it, it’s going to be a piece of cake. Plus, the more you can experiment. You can also use Adobe Lightroom but I’d go for photoshop.”
Which do you prefer, manual mode or auto mode?
“I shoot manual most of the time, but when I’m shooting personal family gatherings I go for auto. Mabilisan dapat.”
They say that if the megapixels of the camera are low, the shots wouldn’t be that catchy and amazing, d’you believe in that?
“Nope! Definitely not. A photographer is not defined by his or her camera, a photographer is defined by his/her talent in taking pictures with anything. Even if its cellphone camera, DSLR, or digital camera. In that way, you’ll see the excellence of the photographer.”
What advice or words of encouragement can you give to the people who’s in into photography?
“Keep on shooting, experiment with things, and never stop. Good luck!”

How to get that awesome-and-amazing photograph many people have been longing to get?
”Having studied photojournalism, shooting an event is like telling a story through a series of photos. It’s best to use manual but if the situation asks for it, like an event where a lot of things are happening and you need to take quick shots before you miss a certain moment, I suggest using automatic.”
What is the best photo editor and why?
“For me, nothing beats Adobe Photoshop. Although there are a lot of others, but if you’re looking for a software that will generally cater to your basic to ‘pro’ needs, it’s Photoshop.”
Which do you prefer, manual mode or auto mode?
“Definitely, manual mode. “In photography, this means that you must learn to control the camera, rather letting it control you” hence, it is I who communicate and decide through the way I adjust the lighting, the focus, framing and other factors in taking a photograph. Wherefore it is a mastery of skill and technique, learning to use a certain equipment creatively and effectively.”
They say that if the megapixels of the camera are low, the shots wouldn’t be that catchy and amazing, d’you believe in that?
“Who wants a blurry and pixelated photo right? A good camera with a quality MP is needed but the outcome, which is the photo, is entirely upon the photographer on how he/she would make it great.”
What advice or words of encouragement can you give to the people who’s in into photography?
”Have a good camera with you and the rest is up to you. In taking photos, decide and visualize what you want to communicate. Practice, practice, practice. Cos photography is a skill and you must practice so you could learn. No amount of reading and theorizing could amount to the actual experience of holding a camera, hearing the click, and viewing a wonderful photo.”
Czareen Elan of czareenlovestroy.
Camera: Nikon D3100
How to get that awesome-and-amazing photograph many people have been longing to get?
“You just have to be ready with your camera all the time. So you wouldn’t miss those “picture perfect moments”. And of course, you should master your camera settings. The rest just comes naturally.”
What is the best photo editor and why?
“Definitely, Lightroom. Because you can manipulate the photo. The lighting, saturation, contrast, curves, basically all the things needed for enhancing the photo. Plus, it’s so easy to use!”
Which do you prefer, manual mode or auto mode?
“Manual mode. Because I can manually operate the settings I’d like for my camera. The exposure, the ISO, and the like.”
They say that if the megapixels of the camera are low, the shots wouldn’t be that catchy and amazing, d’you believe in that?
“It depends on the megapixels. If we’re talking about 2 megapixels, that’s a different thing. Quality is still important.”
What advice or words of encouragement can you give to the people who’s in into photography?
“They should always bring their camera with them. Be prepared. Never miss a beautiful shot. They should not be afraid to explore their camera. Learn the settings and they should see things in a different perspective to have a great picture.”

I sincerely disagree with what her (Rina) professor said about “auto mode (in cameras) is for stupids”, and with her apparent statement that “auto mode is for noob”. This doesn’t apply to all. If you’re a studio shooter who uses atleast 2 lights setup + your external flash, then manual mode is the way to go. But for us who wander in the streets, looking and waiting for the right moment, auto mode is our bestfriend. Not that we don’t have any idea about manual settings and all (believe me, it’s all in our heads), but it’s the moment that we have to cease that might not even last a split of a second that makes us choose auto over manual most of the time. But there are cases where manual mode is very useful to control lighting in the photo. I also use manual mode to put movements in my photos.I find it quite juvenile to declare that “auto mode is for noob” because it’s never always the case. But, I love what Czareen said about knowing your cameras, it’s very true. Don’t get too caught up with the settings available in your cameras though, because a time may come that it’s all that you’ll ever think of instead of the good moments that passed by unceased.

A short update about myself, sa my mga paki, haha sa kakadrawing ko at kakapost ko ng mga drawing ko sa instagram, my pumansin saking indie company na gumagawa ng mga Warhammer Throne of Skulls battle piece. Kinuha nila ako bilang concept artist nila, nyahaha nung una ayaw ko pa, pero nung sinabi na nila sakin yung bayad per drawing, nagemail back agad ako. $a$a$a$a$a$a$a$a$a$a$a$a :)))))

So basically, akoy magpapakabusy muna kakadrawing at kakaisip ng mga concept, Sci-fi Mechs kasi ang theme nila which is wala namang problema sakin, ang ayoko lang about sa pagdrawing ng mga Mechs is dapat pantay pantay yung shape at components nila, tapos wala pa akong ruler, ang ginagamit ko nalang muna na ruler ngayun is yung ID ng ex ko, BWA$A$A$A$A :)))
